Dining rooms exist to fit a dining table and chairs with adequate clearance to pull chairs out, walk past seated guests, and serve. The layout decisions are fewer than living-room layouts — table position, light position, optional buffet, rug — but each matters for the room's success.

In this guide

  1. 1

    Table position

Center the table in the room (or center along the long axis if rectangular). The pendant light centers above the table. Clearance from table edge to wall (chairs pushed in): 36 inches minimum; 48 inches comfortable. Walkway past seated guests: add 24 inches past chair back.

  2. 2

    Buffet/sideboard

Along one wall — typically opposite or perpendicular to the table. Length: 60-84 inches typical. Depth: 18-22 inches. Height: 32-36 inches.

  3. 3

    Pendant/chandelier position

Centered over the table (not centered in the room — over the table). Bottom of fixture above table top: 30-36 inches. Fixture width: ⅓ to ½ the table width.

  4. 4

    Rug

Rug extends 24+ inches past chair backs when chairs pulled out. For 6-seat 72-inch table: 9×12 rug. For 8-seat 96-inch table: 10×14.

  5. 5

    Room sizing

    Minimum: Table + 36 inches each direction. Comfortable: Table + 48 inches each direction. 6-seat (72-inch table): 12×11 minimum. 8-seat (96-inch table): 14×12 minimum.

Place dining table in the center. Add chairs. Add chandelier centered on table. Add rug. Add buffet on one wall.

Tips

Center pendant on TABLE, not on room

Pendant should follow the table, not the room. If they don't align (because the table is offset), follow the table.

Rug extends past chair backs

When chairs pull out for someone to sit, the chair legs should still be on the rug. Otherwise the chair tilts back onto the bare floor.

Common confusions

Pendant centered on room when table is offset

The room and table aren't always centered together. The pendant should hang above the table.

Rug too small for chair pullback

When chairs pull out, the back legs hit the bare floor. Use a rug at least 24 inches wider than the table in each direction.

Frequently asked questions

How much space do I need around a dining table?

36 inches minimum (chairs pushed in). 48 inches comfortable. Add 24 inches for walkway past seated guests.

How high should a dining room chandelier hang?

30-36 inches above the table top. Close enough to light the table; high enough to see across.
