Getting the right amount of flooring is crucial—too little and you'll have mismatched batches, too much and you've wasted money. Here's how to calculate accurately.
Flooring needed = Room area × (1 + Waste factor)
For a 12×14 foot room (168 sq ft) with 10% waste: 168 × 1.10 = 185 sq ft needed
You'll never use 100% of the flooring you buy. Some is lost to:
| Waste % | When to Use |
|---|---|
| 10% | Standard rectangular rooms with planks running parallel to walls |
| 15% | L-shaped rooms, diagonal hardwood, or large-format tiles |
| 20% | Herringbone, chevron, or complex tile patterns |
| Type | Installed Cost | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Hardwood | $8-15/sq ft | Living areas, adds home value |
| Laminate | $2-8/sq ft | Budget-friendly, DIY-friendly |
| Vinyl Plank (LVP) | $3-10/sq ft | Moisture-prone areas, durability |
| Ceramic Tile | $10-20/sq ft | Bathrooms, kitchens, entryways |
| Carpet | $3-12/sq ft | Bedrooms, comfort, sound dampening |
