Garage layouts are sized for cars first, then storage and workshop. The car footprint dictates width; storage and workshop dictate depth. Modern garages often serve as utility, workshop, hobby, and storage rooms beyond just parking.

In this guide

  1. 1

    Car footprints

    Sedan: 75 × 190 inches (6.3 × 16 ft). SUV / pickup: 80 × 230 inches (6.7 × 19 ft). Large pickup: 80 × 250 (6.7 × 21). Walkway around car: 30 inches each side for doors.

  2. 2

    Single-car garage

Standard: 12 × 22 feet. Minimum: 10 × 20. Garage door: 8-9 ft wide × 7 ft tall. Common in: older homes, urban townhouses.

  3. 3

    Two-car garage

    Standard: 22 × 22 feet (or 20 × 22). Generous: 24 × 24. Garage doors: two 8-9 ft doors, OR one 16-ft double door. Standard suburban.

  4. 4

    Three-car garage

Standard: 32 × 22 feet. Generous: 36 × 24. Garage doors: three 8-9 ft doors, OR one double + one single.

  5. 5

    Adding workshop / storage

Add to the rear (depth), not the side (width). A 22 × 28 garage gives a 6-foot deep workshop strip across the back wall. Workshop minimum depth: 4 ft. Comfortable workshop: 6-8 ft.

  6. 6

    Door types

Sectional (rolling): standard residential — 4-7 panels rolling up to ceiling. Tilt-up: older style; single panel. Swing: very old; uncommon.

Tips

Add depth, not width, for workshop

A 22 × 28 garage gives a 6-foot workshop along the back wall. Doesn't change parking width.

Plan electrical for tools

Garage workshops need adequate outlets and lighting. Add 240V if planning for welding or compressors.

Common confusions

12 × 20 garage with a pickup truck

Standard pickups (80 × 230 inches) don't fit comfortably in a 12 × 20 garage. Use 22-24 feet of length.

Frequently asked questions

What's the standard two-car garage size?

22 × 22 feet. 20 × 22 fits but is tight. 24 × 24 is generous.

How much space around a parked car?

30 inches each side for doors. 24 inches front and back for circulation.
