A studio apartment is one main room serving as living, sleeping, kitchen, and sometimes dining. Layout challenge: defining functional zones without walls.

In this guide

  1. 1

    Standard studio sizes

Small: 300-400 sq ft. Average: 400-500. Generous: 500-700.

  2. 2

    Zone the room

Living zone: loveseat or sectional, coffee table, TV — anchored on a rug. Sleeping zone: bed (Queen if possible) — far end of the room or behind a partial divider. Kitchen zone: defined by the cabinetry; usually one-wall. Dining zone: often combined with kitchen island, counter-height table, or absorbed into living.

  3. 3

    Divide without walls

Bookcase or open shelving as a partial divider. Curtain across the room to hide the bed when entertaining. Sofa back as a soft wall. Lofted bed to free floor area below. Murphy bed to give the bed back to the living zone during the day.

  4. 4

    Where to put the bed

Far end from entry door — gives the bed visual distance from the public face. Behind a partial divider if possible. Lofted in studios with 9+ foot ceilings.

  5. 5

    Multipurpose furniture

Murphy bed: folds into wall during day. Sleeper sofa: pulls out for guests. Storage ottoman: coffee table + storage + extra seat. Drop-leaf table: compact daily; extends for guests.

Tips

Multipurpose furniture earns floor area

Murphy bed, sleeper sofa, storage ottoman — each does multiple jobs.
