A dual or double-sided fireplace is embedded in an interior wall with firebox openings facing both sides. Sometimes called a 'see-through' fireplace — you can see flames from two rooms simultaneously. Signature of open-plan modern architecture.

Dual fireplace embedded in an interior wall. The firebox is centered in the wall and the face dimensions appear on either side; both adjacent rooms see the same fire.

In this guide

  1. 1

When to use a dual fireplace

Open-plan houses where a wall divides two living areas — living and dining, living and kitchen, master bedroom and en-suite. You want spaces connected but distinct — fireplace creates a visual divider that doesn't divide. View into multiple rooms — fire becomes a focal point from more than one room.

  2. 2

    Wall and construction requirements

Wall depth: 16-24 inches minimum. Special construction: direct-vent or vent-free units that fire from both sides. Standard wood-burning fireplaces don't work as dual. Hearth and mantle: often present on both sides; sometimes only on the more public side.

  3. 3

    Standard dimensions

Face width (each side): 36-60 inches. Wall depth (total): 16-24 inches. Hearth height: 6-18 inches. Because firebox is embedded in wall, unit doesn't project into either room — both rooms see only the face.

Build Panel → Fireplace section → Dual Fireplace tile. Click, then click an interior wall (must be between two rooms). Set face width, hearth height, wall depth in Inspector.

Tips

Center on the wall

Double-sided fireplace works best dead-center on the wall it occupies. Off-center reads accidental.
